There’s an apple pie made with store-bought crust and pre-made apple pie filling that’s making a big name for itself. If you haven’t yet heard of it I’m thinking you would want to know.
Trisha Yearwood says it all has to do with the skillet and plenty of brown sugar. What makes it stand out is the way the pie is assembled. It’s a favorite of Garth Brooks who says you have to try it to believe just how good it is.
Fans are saying it’s the best apple pie ever.
First, melt the butter in a cast iron skillet. To that add a cup of brown sugar, stirring until the sugar has dissolved slightly into the melted butter. This is where the magic happens! Trisha adds the pie crust to the skillet, on top of the brown sugar butter mixture. That gets filled with a can of apple pie filling and topped with a second pie crust before the skillet goes into the oven.
As the pie bakes, the brown sugar butter mixture caramelizes and sticks to the pie crust. When you cut the pie into slices for serving, each piece has a candied crust on the bottom, a warm apple pie filling in the middle, and a buttery, flaky crust on top. She serves hers with homemade cinnamon whipped cream and it’s equally delicious with vanilla ice cream, too.
Trisha Yearwood’s Skillet Apple Pie
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 cup light brown sugar
2 refrigerated rolled pie crusts, such as Pillsbury
one 21-ounce can of apple pie filling
2 teaspoons cinnamon sugar
1 tablespoon melted butter on top
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
Melt the 1/2 stick butter in a 9-inch cast iron skillet. To the melted butter, add brown sugar and melt them together on medium heat, for about 2 minutes. Remove from the heat then line the skillet with one of the pie crusts. Pour the apple pie filling over the crust and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of the cinnamon sugar. Use the second pie crust to cover the filling. Brush the top with 1 tablespoon of melted butter, then evenly sprinkle the remaining 1 tablespoon of cinnamon sugar on top. Cut vents in the middle of the pie. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown.
I happen to love Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream! Find the recipe under the big pumpkin below. It would be amazing to serve it with Garth’s pie.
